Makha Bucha in Bangkok
Makha Bucha is a Buddhist holiday celebrated in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia,
and some other Southeast Asian countries. It falls on the full moon day of
the third lunar month, which usually falls in February or March in the
Gregorian calendar.
The holiday commemorates a significant event in Buddhist history when 1,250
disciples spontaneously gathered to hear the Buddha preach without any prior
agreement. This event is believed to have occurred nine months after the
Buddha's enlightenment and is considered one of the most important events in
the Buddhist tradition.
During Makha Bucha, Buddhists participate in various activities such as
visiting temples, making merit by giving offerings to monks, practicing
meditation, and observing the five precepts of Buddhism. It's a day for
reflection, gratitude, and deepening one's spiritual practice.
