Don Mueang International Airport
Don Mueang International Airport (IATA: DMK, ICAO: VTBD), also known as the
Old Bangkok International Airport, serves as one of the two primary
international airports for Greater Bangkok, alongside
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).
Established on 27 March 1914, Don Mueang holds the distinction of being one
of the world's oldest international airports and Asia's oldest operational
airport. Although initially commissioned as a Royal Thai Air Force base,
commercial operations commenced in 1924, marking it as one of the earliest
commercial airports globally. The inaugural commercial flight, an arrival by
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, symbolized the airport's entry into the
international aviation arena.
Following the inauguration of Bangkok's new
Suvarnabhumi Airportin 2006, Don Mueang underwent temporary closure
before reopening on 24 March 2007 after extensive renovations. Since its
reopening, the airport has evolved into a regional hub for commuter flights
and the primary base for low-cost carriers. In 2015, it claimed the title of
the world's largest low-cost carrier airport.
Don Mueang International Airport features two terminals: Terminal 1 caters
to international flights, while Terminal 2 handles domestic operations. The
addition of Terminal 2 has significantly bolstered the airport's capacity,
enabling it to accommodate up to 30 million passengers annually.
The airport's strategic location and enhanced facilities have solidified its
status as a crucial transportation hub, facilitating travel and commerce
within the region and beyond. Don Mueang continues to play a pivotal role in
Bangkok's aviation landscape, supporting the growth of both domestic and
international air travel.
Currently, Don Mueang Airport is the main hub for
Nok Air,
Thai AirAsia,
Thai Lion Air, and
Orient Thai Airlines.
